The NYCFM 9/11 Memorial Room

The New York City Fire Museum contains the first permanent memorial to the 343 members of the FDNY who lost their lives on September 11, 2001. The solemn sky-lit tribute to the heroes of 9/11 includes a black marble and tile memorial with pictures of the firefighters lost in the attacks; cases displaying tools used and items recovered from the Ground Zero recovery effort; and a wall-size timeline chronicling that day’s tragic events.

This permanent memorial to the 343 firefighters lost on September 11, 2001 was designed by Jude Amsel and is made up of tiles with the names and images of each firefighter.

The September 11th memorial room contains objects recovered from the World Trade Center site accompanied by photographs taken that day and in the days following. This room is a permanent testament to the honor and valor displayed by the fallen firefighters and rescue workers.

Tools and equipment recovered from the World Trade Center site. This case contains a ruptured air tank from an FDNY self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA).

The World Trade Center memorial piece on the left was a gift to the FDNY by the Iron Workers of Local 40. The piece of steel on the right was used to make crosses for the loved ones of victims of the WTC attacks. Both are composed of steel from the WTC buildings found during during recovery operations.

A timeline of the events of September 11, 2001 is accompanied by photographs from that day and the ensuing rescue and recovery efforts.
